What Is the DPDP Act?

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 is India's first comprehensive data protection law. It regulates how personal data of Indian citizens is collected, processed, stored, and transferred. Every business, professional, and individual handling personal data must comply, including the digital tools they use to process documents.

The Act defines a Data Fiduciary as anyone who determines the purpose and means of processing personal data. It defines a Data Processor as anyone who processes data on behalf of a fiduciary. When you upload a document containing personal data to an online PDF tool, that tool becomes a Data Processor under the DPDP Act.
