What Is a TIFF File?
TIFF stands for Tagged Image File Format. It was developed in the mid-1980s by Aldus Corporation, which later merged with Adobe Systems, as a flexible container for storing raster images. Unlike JPEG, which compresses images by discarding visual data, or PNG, which is optimized for screen graphics, TIFF was designed for situations where every pixel matters.
A TIFF file stores image data in tags, small metadata blocks that describe everything from image dimensions and color depth to compression method and scanner model. This tag-based architecture is what gives TIFF its flexibility and also its complexity. A single TIFF file can contain multiple images, different color spaces, layers, and even transparency information.
What Is TIFF Used For?
TIFF dominates three specific domains.
Document Scanning
When a flatbed scanner captures a contract, invoice, or identification document, it often defaults to TIFF. The format preserves the full bit depth of the scan without introducing the compression artifacts that JPEG would add.
Archival Preservation
Libraries, museums, and government archives use TIFF because it supports lossless compression methods like LZW and ZIP. A TIFF saved today will look identical when opened fifty years later, provided the file itself remains intact.
Professional Imaging
Print publishers, medical imaging systems, and geographic information systems rely on TIFF for its support of high bit depths, multiple color channels, and CMYK color space. A TIFF can store a 16-bit-per-channel image that a JPEG simply cannot represent.

Why Is TIFF Difficult to Convert?
The same features that make TIFF powerful also make it challenging to work with in everyday software.
Browser Incompatibility
Most web browsers cannot render TIFF files natively. When you double-click a JPEG, your browser displays it instantly. A TIFF usually triggers a download prompt or shows a blank page. This means online conversion tools cannot rely on the browser's built-in image decoder.
File Size
TIFF files are often uncompressed. A single A4 page scanned at 300 DPI in full color can easily produce a TIFF of 25 megabytes or more. The same page as a JPEG might be under 2 megabytes. This size difference matters when software tries to read the file into memory.
Metadata Complexity
TIFF tags can embed scanner settings, software versions, geographic coordinates, and color profiles. Decoding software must parse every tag correctly to render the image accurately. A malformed tag or an unsupported compression scheme can cause the decoder to fail silently.
Multi-Page Ambiguity
A TIFF file can contain multiple pages or frames within a single file. Most simple conversion tools read only the first frame and ignore the rest. Users who expect a multi-page TIFF to become a multi-page PDF are often disappointed.

How TIFF Should Be Converted
The conversion process involves three technical stages: decoding, rasterizing, and embedding.
Decoding
The TIFF file must be parsed by a decoder that understands the tag structure. Open-source libraries like UTIF.js read the tags, identify the compression method, and decompress the raw pixel data. This happens entirely in the browser's memory.
Rasterizing
The decoded pixel data is drawn onto an HTML canvas element. The canvas acts as a temporary staging area where the image is rendered at its native resolution. No pixels are discarded during this stage unless the user explicitly requests a lower quality setting.
Embedding
The canvas content is then encoded into a PDF page using a PDF generation library. The image is embedded at the resolution and quality level the user selects. Best quality settings apply minimal JPEG compression, preserving the visual fidelity of the original scan.
A Practical Guide for Users
If you have a TIFF file that needs to become a PDF, follow these steps.
- Confirm that your file is actually a TIFF. The extension will be .tif or .tiff. On Windows, right-click the file and check Properties. On Mac, select the file and press Command-I to view the Info panel.
- Understand your source. If the TIFF came from a scanner, it is likely a single-page document. If it came from a medical imaging system or a GIS application, it may contain multiple frames or unusual color spaces. Single-page scans convert cleanly. Multi-frame files require splitting first.
- Choose your quality setting before converting. If the PDF is for archival storage, select the highest quality to minimize re-compression. If the PDF is for email or web upload, a medium quality setting will produce a much smaller file with acceptable visual results.
- Verify the output. Open the generated PDF and check that text remains sharp, colors look correct, and no pages are missing. If the PDF looks wrong, the original TIFF may use an unsupported compression scheme or color profile.
- Keep your original TIFF. PDF is excellent for sharing and printing, but it is not a replacement for a lossless master file. Store the TIFF in your long-term archive and use the PDF as the working copy.
